Metallic and iron wire product tends to get rusty and lose their shiny luster quickly as a result of use. This therefore calls for the need to provide protective coating or covering for the wire used in wire baskets and grids. A number of technological methods to address this problem have been developed. They include, electroplating, galvanizing and use of laminating polyethylene or fluidized bed- plastic coating. All of these methods are efficient although the use of the fluidized laminating polyethylene is most favored for food products.

How the laminating polyethylene process works

The wire basket or grid that needs to be coated is first preheated using an oven, and then it is dipped in a fluidized bed solution which comprises of powder particles. When the powder particles come into contact with the heated parts of the wire basket or grid, they melt on them, gradually building on them. This goes on until a uniform coating forms around the wire or grid. The object is then removed from the solution and either left for the laminating polyethylene coating to evenly melt around it using the heat of the wire or grid. Alternatively it can be returned to the oven for heating.
