What is stainless steel passivation?

Stainless steel passivation is the process of making the surface passive, in other words, creating a surface film that causes it to lose its natural reactivity to chemical. Through this process, stainless steel is unipotentialized with oxygen that is likely to be absorbed by creating a monomolecular oxide film. The process of passivation can result in undesired low corrosion rates in the metal.

How is stainless steel passivated?

The process is carried out when iron, rust, oxide scale, free iron, metal chips or any other nonvolatile deposits that are likely to negatively affect the sanitary condition or stability or metallurgical of surface contaminate the processing fluid. Passivation is done on clean stainless steel surfaces after they have been thoroughly de-scaled or cleaned. The word passivation is a term used to describe the different processes and operations that are carried out in regards to stainless steels.

Some of the greatest benefits attributed to stainless steel passivation include increased corrosion resistance, removal of sulfates for stainless alloy surfaces, removal of surface contamination on machined parts and it causes no dimensional or physical changes. For products meant for the beverage and food processing, aerospace, electronics and medical industries, passivation is a required process. It is a necessary process due to metallic particles such as grease and oils that could have been smeared corrosion resistant stainless steel surfaces during manufacturing. If these impurities are allowed to remain on the surface, they eventually oxidize and produce unsightly rust spots.
